How to buy

Buying a Bitcoin ETF at Fidelity

Fidelity issues FBTC and carries every rival fund. Here is the order screen, fractional-share handling, IRA access, and how Fidelity Crypto differs from the ETF.

Fidelity occupies an unusual position in this market: it is both a broker where you can buy any spot Bitcoin ETF and the issuer of one of the largest. It also runs its own crypto trading service and its own digital asset custodian. That vertical integration makes it one of the more complete platforms for this asset class — and it means there are three different products with "Fidelity" and "bitcoin" in the name, which is where the confusion starts.

What Fidelity actually offers

Three different Fidelity bitcoin products
ProductWhat it isCostAccess
FBTC (the fund) Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund — a spot ETP holding bitcoin 0.25% sponsor fee Any brokerage or IRA account
Rival funds IBIT, GBTC, BTC, BITB, ARKB and the rest Each issuer's own fee Same accounts, $0 commission
Fidelity Crypto Direct bitcoin and ether trading in a separate crypto account Spread-based pricing Separate account type
Fidelity Digital Assets The regulated custodian that holds FBTC's bitcoin Not a retail product Institutional

The one that matters for this page is the first two rows: any spot Bitcoin ETF, commission-free, in a standard brokerage or IRA account.

Buying, step by step

  1. Open the account type you actually want

Taxable brokerage, Roth IRA or traditional IRA. Fidelity supports crypto ETPs in all of them. Get this right first — it matters far more than the ticker, as we argue in the retirement account guide.

  2. Fund it

ACH transfer is free and typically clears in one to three business days. Fidelity often extends buying power against a pending transfer, so you can trade before the cash physically arrives — just do not withdraw against it.

  3. Search the ticker

Type the symbol and confirm the fund name that appears. "Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund" is FBTC. Anything containing "Strategy", "Short" or a multiple is a futures or leveraged product, not a spot fund.

  4. Select Trade, then Buy

Fidelity's ticket offers share quantity or dollar amount. Dollar amounts give you fractional shares.

  5. Set order type to Limit

Price it at or one to two cents above the current ask. Avoid the first and last fifteen minutes of the session, when spreads are widest — details in limit orders.

  6. Time in force: Day

Keeps a stale order from filling into tomorrow's gap.

  7. Preview, submit, confirm

Check the fill price against the quote you saw. Settlement is one business day after the trade.

FBTC and the self-custody question

FBTC launched on 11 January 2024 alongside the rest of the first cohort, charges a 0.25% sponsor fee, and holds roughly $13.2 billion in net assets — third largest in the category. Its distinguishing feature is not the fee. It is custody.

Nine of the twelve US spot Bitcoin ETPs involve Coinbase Custody. FBTC does not: its bitcoin sits with Fidelity Digital Asset Services, a New York-chartered trust company inside the same corporate group as the fund's sponsor.

That cuts both ways honestly. It removes an external counterparty and puts custody inside a firm with decades of institutional asset-servicing history, and it reduces exposure to the concentration that has most of the category resting on one provider. It also creates an affiliated relationship where sponsor and custodian answer to the same parent, which weakens the independent check a third-party custodian provides. Neither structure is obviously superior — the argument is set out in the FBTC profile and custody explained.

Brokerage platform with an ETF trade ticket open
Fidelity's ticket supports dollar amounts as well as share counts — a small feature that makes regular contributions to a $43 fund considerably easier to manage.

Fractional shares, and why it matters here

At IBIT's price of roughly $43.74 on 2 September 2026, whole-share investing is hardly a barrier. Where fractional support earns its keep is regular contributions.

If you want to add exactly $200 a month, whole shares force you to either round down and leave cash idle or round up and overshoot. Dollar-based investing puts the full amount to work every time and keeps your contribution schedule clean. Over years of automated buying, that is a genuine operational advantage, and it is one of the two or three real differences between brokers — see brokers compared.

Fidelity Crypto: a different product entirely

Fidelity launched commission-free crypto trading for retail investors, and through Fidelity Crypto you can buy and sell actual bitcoin and ether. It is worth being precise about how this differs from the fund, because the two live under the same login and are not interchangeable.

FBTC versus Fidelity Crypto
FeatureFBTC (the ETF)Fidelity Crypto
What you hold A share in a trust that owns bitcoin Bitcoin, in a Fidelity crypto account
Trading hours US market hours only Extended, near-continuous
Cost model 0.25% annual sponsor fee Spread built into the price
Eligible in an IRA Yes No — a separate account type
Assets available Bitcoin (or ETH via FETH) Bitcoin and ether
Tax reporting Broker 1099-B Crypto-specific reporting

Before treating a broker crypto account as equivalent to owning the asset, check the withdrawal policy for the specific asset — a venue that will sell you bitcoin but not let you move it is closer to a fund than to self-custody.

For self-custody, use a dedicated exchange

Broker crypto accounts typically carry wider spreads than a dedicated venue and offer fewer assets. CEX.IO is registered with FinCEN as a money services business, holds money transmitter licences across US states under NMLS ID 1804170, and is authorised in Gibraltar as a DLT provider — with withdrawal to your own wallet.

Retirement accounts at Fidelity

Fidelity supports spot crypto ETPs in self-directed Roth, traditional, SEP and rollover IRAs. This is the strongest reason to hold the fund rather than the coin: a Roth shelters an asset that pays no income and could appreciate substantially, and it makes rebalancing a volatile position free of tax consequences.

Fidelity is also a very common 401(k) recordkeeper, which creates a specific point of confusion. Your employer plan's menu is chosen by your plan sponsor, not by Fidelity, so a crypto ETP may be unavailable in your 401(k) while being freely available in a Fidelity IRA you open yourself. If your plan offers a brokerage window, that often permits any listed ETF. Full treatment in Roth IRA and 401(k).

Where Fidelity is strong, and where it is not

Strong:

  • Dollar-based investing on ETFs, which makes small regular buys practical.
  • Full IRA support across account types, with no crypto-specific restrictions.
  • Carries every rival fund at $0 commission with no nudging toward its own.
  • Direct crypto trading available under the same login if you want both.
  • Self-custodied FBTC, if you specifically want to avoid the category's custody concentration.

Weaker:

  • FBTC's 0.25% fee is nearly double the cheapest options — MSBT at 0.14% and the Grayscale Mini Trust at 0.15%. You can buy those here, so this is a fund criticism rather than a platform one.
  • Order routing tools are more basic than Schwab's thinkorswim or Interactive Brokers.
  • Fidelity Crypto covers only bitcoin and ether, and spreads are wider than a dedicated exchange.

Our take from the desk

If you already bank with Fidelity, there is no reason to look further for this — and the fractional-share support is a quietly useful feature for anyone contributing monthly. The one thing we would push back on is defaulting to FBTC just because you are on Fidelity's platform. It is a perfectly good fund with an interesting custody structure, and it costs 0.10 percentage points more a year than the Grayscale Mini Trust you can buy on the same screen for the same commission.

Buying a Bitcoin ETF at Fidelity: FAQ

How do I buy a Bitcoin ETF on Fidelity?
Log in, search the ticker (FBTC, IBIT, BTC, MSBT and so on), select Trade, choose Buy, enter either a share count or a dollar amount since Fidelity supports fractional investing, set the order type to Limit with a price at or just above the current ask, set time in force to Day, and submit during regular market hours. Commission is $0.
Does Fidelity have its own Bitcoin ETF?
Yes — the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), launched 11 January 2024 with a 0.25% sponsor fee and roughly $13.2 billion in net assets. It is unusual in that Fidelity self-custodies the bitcoin through Fidelity Digital Asset Services rather than using a third-party custodian.
Can I buy other issuers' Bitcoin ETFs at Fidelity?
Yes. Fidelity carries competitors' funds including IBIT, GBTC, the Grayscale Mini Trust, BITB and ARKB. There is no restriction pushing you toward FBTC, and commission is $0 on all listed ETFs regardless of issuer.
Does Fidelity allow fractional shares of a Bitcoin ETF?
Yes. Fidelity supports dollar-based investing on ETFs, so you can buy a specific dollar amount rather than a whole number of shares. That makes small regular contributions practical, which is one of its genuine advantages over Vanguard, E*TRADE and Merrill Edge.
Is Fidelity Crypto the same as buying a Bitcoin ETF?
No. Fidelity Crypto lets you buy actual bitcoin and ether in a separate crypto account, priced with a spread rather than a commission. A Bitcoin ETF is a share in a trust, held in your brokerage account, tradeable only in market hours. Different products with different tax treatment — see our comparison in ETF vs owning crypto.
