Buying a Bitcoin ETF at Charles Schwab

Schwab carries every US spot crypto ETF commission-free. Here is the order process, what thinkorswim adds, the Stock Slices limitation, and its 2026 direct-crypto rollout.

Schwab's position on crypto has moved a long way. Having spent years offering exposure only through equity proxies and thematic funds, it now carries the full range of spot crypto ETPs commission-free and announced in April 2026 that it would launch direct bitcoin and ether trading — in reporting at the time, explicitly framed as competing with Robinhood.

For ETF buyers, Schwab's distinguishing feature is not price or product range, both of which match its peers. It is execution tooling.

Schwab also offers thematic and equity-based crypto funds that hold companies rather than coins — a different exposure entirely, covered in blockchain and crypto equity ETFs.

Buying, step by step

  1. Choose the account

Taxable, Roth IRA, traditional IRA or rollover. Schwab permits crypto ETPs in all of them. The account decision dominates the fund decision — see Roth IRA and 401(k).

  2. Fund it

ACH is free and usually clears within one to three business days. Wire transfers are same-day at a fee.

  3. Look up the ticker and verify the name

Confirm you are looking at a spot product. "iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF" is IBIT; "ProShares Bitcoin Strategy" is a futures fund with an estimated 2.9% annual drag — see spot vs futures.

  4. Enter whole shares

No fractional option on ETFs, so divide your dollar target by the current ask and round down.

  5. Order type: Limit

Price at or a cent or two above the ask, mid-session. See limit orders.

  6. Time in force: Day; extended hours off

Overnight sessions are thin and expensive.

  7. Submit and reconcile

Compare the fill against the quote. Settlement is T+1.

What thinkorswim actually adds

For a once-a-year buy-and-hold purchase, nothing you need. For anyone trading with any regularity, three things.

Depth of book. The standard web ticket shows you the top-of-book quote. A tight spread on 100 shares tells you very little about how a 5,000-share order will fill. thinkorswim shows the ladder, which is the information that actually matters for sizing an order.

Order type range. Conditional orders, trailing logic and routing preferences that the simplified ticket does not expose. Useful, with one large caveat covered below.

Options analytics. If you write covered calls against a position or buy protective puts, this is where Schwab earns its reputation. In practice that means IBIT, which has the only genuinely deep listed options market among spot Bitcoin funds.

Advanced trading platform showing depth of book and options chain
Depth of book is the one piece of information a simplified order ticket hides and a serious buyer needs. It is the strongest argument for using thinkorswim over the web ticket.

The Stock Slices limitation

Schwab Stock Slices is a genuine fractional-investing product, and it does not help here: it covers S&P 500 companies only, which excludes exchange-traded products.

So Bitcoin ETF orders at Schwab are whole-share. At roughly $43 a share for IBIT that is a small constraint on absolute terms, but it makes automated exact-dollar contributions awkward — you either round down and leave cash uninvested or round up and overshoot each month. If regular fixed-dollar buying is central to your plan, Fidelity or Robinhood handle it better; see brokers compared.

Schwab direct crypto, and what it changes

Schwab announced in April 2026 that it would launch direct bitcoin and ether trading, positioning it against Robinhood, and has continued expanding its crypto offering through the year. Because rollouts of this kind are staged by account type and region, confirm current availability on Schwab's own site rather than relying on any third-party page — including this one.

The important question when it does arrive is withdrawal. A broker crypto service that lets you buy bitcoin but not move it on-chain gives you something closer to a fund with different tax paperwork, not self-custody. That distinction is the whole subject of ETF vs owning crypto, and it is worth checking before treating a broker crypto balance as owning the asset.

Withdrawal is the test of whether you own it

Any venue that sells you bitcoin without letting you move it has sold you exposure, not the asset. CEX.IO supports on-chain withdrawal, is registered with FinCEN as a money services business, licensed for money transmission across US states, and authorised in Gibraltar as a DLT provider.

Retirement accounts at Schwab

Schwab supports spot crypto ETPs across Roth, traditional, SEP and rollover IRAs with no crypto-specific restrictions. Options trading in IRAs is permitted at approval levels that typically allow covered calls and protective puts, which pairs usefully with thinkorswim if you want to manage a volatile position inside a tax shelter.

Schwab is also a large 401(k) recordkeeper, and the same distinction applies as at Fidelity: your employer plan's menu is chosen by your plan sponsor, not by Schwab. A crypto ETP may be unavailable in your workplace plan while being freely available in a Schwab IRA you open yourself.

Which fund to buy on Schwab

Schwab issues none of its own, which is quietly an advantage — there is no house product being nudged at you. That leaves the choice open on merit, and since commission is $0 across every listed fund, the decision is purely about the fund itself.

For a whole-share platform, the per-share price becomes mildly relevant to position sizing. IBIT traded around $43.74 on 2 September 2026, which divides into most order sizes cleanly. Beyond that, apply the ordinary filters: confirm it is a spot fund, exclude anything sub-scale, then pick on standing sponsor fee if you are holding or on spread if you trade. Morgan Stanley's MSBT at 0.14% and the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust at 0.15% are the cheapest; IBIT at 0.25% buys you the tightest spread in the category, around 0.02% on a 30-day median basis, plus the options market thinkorswim is built to exploit.

One fund to actively avoid opening a new position in: GBTC at 1.50%, when Grayscale itself offers the same bitcoin at the same custodian for 0.15% under ticker BTC. The full comparison is in the GBTC profile, and the five-filter framework is in how to choose a Bitcoin ETF.

Verdict

Choose Schwab for this if: your assets are already there, or you want depth of book, real order-routing control and serious options analytics without paying Interactive Brokers' learning curve.

Look elsewhere if: you want fractional shares for automated small contributions — Fidelity or Robinhood — or you want to hold the asset itself with on-chain withdrawal, which is a job for a dedicated exchange rather than any broker.

Our take from the desk

Schwab is the platform we would pick if we were actively managing a crypto ETF position rather than accumulating one, purely for depth of book and the options chain. For monthly buy-and-hold contributions the absence of fractional ETF investing is a genuine irritation, and it is odd that a firm with a well-built fractional product limited it to the S&P 500. That is the one thing on this page we would like to see change.

Buying a Bitcoin ETF at Schwab: FAQ

How do I buy a Bitcoin ETF on Schwab?
Log in, search the ticker (IBIT, FBTC, BTC, MSBT and others), open the trade ticket, select Buy, enter a whole number of shares, set order type to Limit with a price at or just above the current ask, choose Day for time in force, and submit during regular market hours. Commission is $0 on all listed US ETFs.
Does Schwab offer Bitcoin ETFs?
Yes. Schwab carries the full range of US spot Bitcoin and Ether ETPs commission-free in both brokerage and retirement accounts. It does not issue crypto funds of its own.
Can I buy fractional shares of a Bitcoin ETF at Schwab?
No. Schwab Stock Slices supports fractional investing but is limited to S&P 500 companies, which excludes exchange-traded products. Bitcoin ETF orders at Schwab must be for whole shares. At roughly $43 a share that is a minor constraint, but it makes exact-dollar recurring contributions awkward.
Does Schwab let me buy actual bitcoin?
Schwab announced in April 2026 that it would launch direct bitcoin and ether trading, explicitly to compete with Robinhood, and has been expanding its crypto offering through 2026. Confirm current availability and the asset list on Schwab's own site, since rollouts of this kind are staged.
Is Schwab or Fidelity better for Bitcoin ETFs?
Fidelity if you want fractional shares for small regular contributions. Schwab if you want better order routing and analytics through thinkorswim. Both charge $0 commission, both support IRAs, and both carry the same funds — so for most buy-and-hold investors the answer is whichever already holds your money.
